Utah only state to OK guns at college

Old article but news to me

updated 8:02 a.m. CT, Sat., April 28, 2007

SALT LAKE CITY - Brent Tenney says he feels pretty safe when he goes to class at the University of Utah, but he takes no chances. He brings a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic with him every day.

"It's not that I run around scared all day long, but if something happens to me, I do want to be prepared," said the 24-year-old business major, who has a concealed-weapons permit and takes the handgun everywhere but church.

After the massacre at Virginia Tech that left 33 dead, some have suggested that the carnage might have been lower if a student or professor with a gun had stepped in.

Yep.
I've watched this as a(until-recently) resident of that fine city as the situation has unfolded. The University of Utah had a MAJOR court battle with the State of Utah about this issue, the State claiming in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that the University WOULD honor issued CCW permits, and the Liberal (no surprise here...) University fighting them tooth-and-nail to keep "evil guns" off "It's campus".

The State eventually prevailed (to my relief!) and students can now carry - a first in the nation!

A sideline event. I was in the city when the Trolley Square shootings took place, and was ACTUALLY IN ROUTE to that mall at the time - to meet with my girlfriend for dinner. I decided to drop by a bank first, to cash a check, and was delayed by about 15 min. as a consequence. My girlfriend (driving her own car) parked, then heard the shots as she walked into the mall. She immediately reversed direction, went back to her car, and drove back to her work to call me. By the time I received the call, I was already trying to get around all the cops, ambulences, and fire trucks that suddenly swarmed the area... with ultimate failure. We met up a few blocks away, and watch with growing fascination as HUNDREDS of emergency vehicles swarmed the area we were about to dine at.

I later figured out that if I had not cashed my check, I would have pulled into the parking lot at almost the EXACT time that the shooter began unloading his shotgun... which could have gone many ways, as I ALWAYS carry a Sig P226 wherever I go in public.

How interesting the experiences that the fates hand us... I'm both glad and somewhat regretful when I think of what happened that day.

So... how long before we get a school shooting spree there?

Any bets?

Arizona House & Senate just passed a bill to allow guns on colleges - we'll see if the Gov signs it.

Are you saying that a licensed CCW carrier is going to somehow "bubble off" and start popping fellow students and faculty?

I'd bet that none of the recent mass murderers had CCWs.

20 FRNs say that there will be no school shootings (that is, of innocent people) by a licensed CCW carrier on the grounds or buildings of an accredited post-secondary educational institution in the state of Utah from today (July 13, 2009) until 11:59 p.m. on July 13, 2010.

If a CCW carrier does end up having to shoot some murderer or other violent criminal on campus, well, that's just too bad for the criminal, and doesn't count for this bet

Fair enough?

I think and at least hope he meant there will not be any on a campus that allows CCW

Meatman got the gist...

Didn't want to put the sarc tag up so the people who are against would stop and think... :-)

I'll be the first person to say campuses need to let gun owners carry.

It's legal in Oregon. Just don't get caught or you'll be forced to prove it.

it is legal everywhere if you claim and assert your right and obligation for self defense. shall not be infringed..........just because supreme court judges cannot understand simple english doesn't mean i can't.

Eh, sorry if I came off as a jerk :coolbeer:

I *was* thinking of betting an ASE, but then figured that if I lost the bet, I'd feel better about paying fiat instead of losing real money :bawling:

It's kind of funny that laws/case law which can be easily passed, seem to hold more weight to judges than amendments which are nearly impossible.

Follow the constitution or GTFO IMHO.

No worries... and I'd take the 20 bucks, I can get almost 2 ounces of silver with that right now. :-D
